STAR-STUFF

“Our Sun is a second- or third-generation star. All of the rocky and metallic material we stand on, the iron in our blood, the calcium in our teeth, the carbon in our genes were produced billions of years ago in the interior of a red giant star. WE ARE MADE OF STAR-STUFF.”
Carl Sagan, 1973, The Cosmic Connection: An Extraterrestrial Perspective.

This series, “Star-Stuff,” is mixed media on wrapped canvas using acrylic paint, gel medium, metallic powder, mirrors, glass fragments, mica shavings, embossing foil, sand, fake pearls, craft paper, and tissue paper.  The entire canvas is wrapped in scrunched and pulled tissue paper, heavy craft paper, and paint to create the first layer of texture.  Each subsequent layer is made of all materials listed, occasionally with weaving and twisting to create the feeling of movement.
